Abstract

Abstract Background: Diarrhea is the second cause of death in children aged < 2 years in Indonesia. Gold Standard of feeding practices in a baby is conducted to reduce the prevalence of death in children, i.e the exclusive breastfeeding, the food complementary for children until aged two years old. The exclusive breastfeeding in East Kalimantan was 29% and the male smoker’s prevalence 25% (females and babies as passive smokers). Methods: Medical diagnosis was identified in 170 babies aged < 1 year in three children’s room. This study used the pattern of breastfeeding as independent variable and diarrhea as a dependent variable, while inter variables such as babies’ age, water sources, smokers, family income and bottle usage. Analysis of the study used multivariate logistic regression. Results: Babies aged < 1 year suffered from diarrhea 31,2%, breastfeeding practices 37,6%, partial 59,4% and predominant 2,9% and paternal smokers 60,1%. The result showed an association between the pattern of breastfeeding (partial and exclusive) and diarrhea with p-value of 0,018 and 0,005, respectively. The value of exp (B) was obtained 3,0 (95% CI: 1,4 – 6,5). Conclusion: Breastfeeding exclusive decreased diarrhea prevalence. Paternal smoking was the risk of mothers became passive smokers, therefore it decreased the beneficial protection of breastfeeding and increased the diarrhea prevalence in young age baby.
